I am sure that every girl in her childhood would have surely read the classic tales such as ‘Cinderella’, ‘Rapunzel’, and ‘Snow White’ and ‘The little Mermaid’ and many more creations of the magical world of princesses. I too was enthralled in these tales as a young child and too wanted to be one of those princesses. But now, if I consider these tales though they were based on princesses but still the main protagonist was not given enough power and were in a helpless situation. From these tales we can clearly conclude that girls were not only discriminated in India but also in the foreign countries due to gender issues. Like in the story Cinderella, why Cinderella did became a slave after her father’s death and had to tolerate the tortures of her step-mother and step-sister. Didn’t she have any right on her home and property? Why was she shown as a helpless girl when she could have easily secured her position? Some contradiction can be given on the story Rapunzel in which Rapunzel has so long hair and she can easily escape from the tall tower where she is kept by the evil witch. She didn’t really need to wait for her savior to come and rescue her. The story Snow White was also ironical in a way that Snow White was being protected by Dwarfs who were half her size and she herself was meek and miserable to do anything. All the tales till 21st century have portrayed princesses as a trophy thing who were very beautiful and rich but still didn’t have the potential to get their rights themselves. Why did the Authors discriminated among gender is beyond my thinking.
Now the times are changing and the princesses are realizing their potential. No longer do they require a prince to save them but sometimes they are the ones who save everyone. Stories of Movies like ‘Frozen’ and ‘Moana’ hold examples in which princesses break the wall of restrictions and realize their capabilities and powers. I don’t reckon that stories like Cinderella and Snow White should not read by kids anymore. They shall always remain classics as the magic in them is wonderful but their lies one main flaw that is discrimination which in today’s world finds no place when girls are equivalent to boys in all aspects. So, therefore kids should read them but not be inspired by them and should try reading some new pieces of literature without discrimination.
Truly changed my opinion about these stories. Good reasons were given.
